Gametogenesis and reproductive cycles in the sea anemone Anthopleura elegantissima. When they relax, the body expands because of the resilience of the tunic, and water is drawn in through the oral siphon. As men- tioned in Chapter 13, there is strong recent evidence that echiuran epidermal chaetae are homologous with those of annelids. A large body of research on bee navigation has accu- mulated since the pioneering “dancing bee studies” of von Frisch.

Medusae of the British Isles, Vols. 1 and 2. Phylum Monoblastozoa Salinella has apparently not been studied since its re- ported discovery in 1892 by Frenzel, who found it in cultures of Argentine salt-bed material. But let’s look now at fossil evidence from other groups. Their skeletons are made mostly of cartilage and not actual bone, being of a more ancient classification of fish in evol…utionary terms. Whether something is cute or not is subjective, however sharks aren't exactly an animal that have the head/body porportions similar to what humans usually see as cute, they don't look neotonous (like babies).

Even within the same family there can be a variety of feeding modes, such as those found among the species of Tarsonemidae and Tydeidae. Other vessels receive blood forced from these sinuses and conduct it back to the pumping vessels. You need to have at least 5 reputation to vote a question down.

Crystal axes in recent and fossil adult echinoids in- dicate trophic mode in larval development. The mandibles lack palps (in all insects) and typ- ically bear small, sharp teeth that work in opposition as the appendages slide against each other in the trans- verse (side to side) fashion characteristic of most arthro- pod jaws (Figure 17.5). Asexual reproduction by transverse binary fission (homothetogenic) 7. Asexual reproduction takes place by external or internal budding (formation of gemmules) or by disintegration of body into reduction bodies.

Oreaster extrudes its stomach over sand, algae, or sea grass and ingests the associated microorganisms and particulate detritus. Insects may go through stages (metamorphosis) in their life cycle. Mites, ticks and “chiggers” (Figure 19.3). Although most are probably strictly benthic and largely sedentary, at least one species of enteropneust (Glandiceps hacksii) sometimes swarms at the surface in shallow water, where it feeds on phytoplankton.

Among the arthropods, compound eyes elevated on stalks occur only in certain crustaceans (and perhaps a few Paleozoic trilobites). Although the cave-dwelling caridean shrimp Procaris is omnivorous, its predatory behavior is particularly in- teresting. The ciliates shown in Figures 5.1E and 5.13 illustrate a variety of body forms within this large and complex group of protists. From ante- rior to posterior, these are the antennules (first anten- nae), antennae (second antennae), mandibles, maxil- lules (first maxillae), and maxillae (second maxillae).

A male cyprid settles on the externa, transforms into a minute sexually mature instar called a trichogon, and moves into the ovary-filled externa to take up residence, where its sole function is to produce sperm. They are disruptive to the entire class, and distract others as well. Allowing children time to get engaged and use different thinking skills to understand vertebrates and invertebrates can also help them with sorting and other classification skills.

The major strengths of the graduate program in zoology are in the areas of animal behavior; cellular, molecular, and developmental biology; and evolution and ecology. Sharks do have backbones, making them vertebrates. However, most of the gammaridean amphipods are marine benthic species, and a few have adopted a pelagic lifestyle, usually in deep oceanic wa- ters.
